Mary was born in 1857 in New Mills Derbyshire.1 Mary's father was John Bates and her mother was Grace Waterhouse.  Her maternal grandparents were  Joseph Waterhouse and  Leah Turner.  She was the youngest of three children.  She had two sisters named Ann and Alice.
