Ann was born in 1850 in New Mills Derbyshire.1 Ann's father was John Bates and her mother was Grace Waterhouse. Her maternal grandparents were Joseph Waterhouse and Leah Turner. She was the oldest of three children. She had two sisters named Alice and Mary.
