Francis was born in 1824 in Shoreditch, Middlesex.1 Francis' father was George Woods and his mother was Sophia. His paternal grandparents were <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He was the oldest of five children. He had three brothers and a sister, named William, Harry, Edwin and Frances.
