William was born in 1829 in Islington, Middlesex.1 William's father was George Woods and his mother was Sophia. His paternal grandparents were <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He was the second of five children. He had three brothers and a sister, named Francis, Harry, Edwin and Frances.
