Thomas' father was John Barley and his mother was Jane Barley. His maternal grandparents were John Barley and Ann Taylor. He was the youngest of three children. He had a brother and a sister, named George and Elizabeth. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named John, Thomas, Ann and Jane.
