Herbert's father was Edwin Beaven and his mother was Ellen Laura Burlton. His paternal grandparents were Job Beaven and Emma Gibson. He was the oldest of three children. He had a brother and a sister, named <Unknown> and Phyllis. He died, at the age of 79, in 1976.
