Elizabeth's father was Michael Hill Skinner and her mother was Helen/Ellen Bainbridge. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Skinner and Emma Hill; her maternal grandparents were William Bainbridge and Sarah Quickfall. She was the oldest of four children. She had three sisters named Sarah, Betsy and Maud. She had a half-sister named Annie.
